Highlights for 2009
- Awarded $155,617 in grants to 61 Island nonprofit and public organizations in the areas of art and culture, community and civic affairs, education, the elderly, the environment, health and human services, recreation and youth.
- Approved $124,500 in scholarships to 54 Island students pursuing higher education and $9,450 in awards to 11 Islanders preparing for their United States Coast Guard 100 Ton Master Licenses.
- Established the Lillian Hellman Recreational Fund with a bequest from the estate of Lillian Hellman. This grant fund supports recreational, leisure and educational activities for school age children on Martha's Vineyard with a preference for programs serving children from Aquinnah.
- Rebuilt over 95% of the asset value of the Endowment's investment portfolio at the end of 2007 through the generosity of donors and sound asset management by the Martha's Vineyard Financial Group.
- Awarded the first scholarship from the Wendy Weisman Jenkinson Culinary Arts Fund, established in October 2008 in memory of Island resident, Wendy Weisman Jenkinson.
- Named Camp Jabberwocky and its founder, Helen Lamb, as the twenty eighth recipients of the Creative Living Award which recognizes individuals and organizations who have contributed significantly to the quality of life on the Island.
- Welcomed Donald Ogilvie, Independent Chairman of the Deloitte Center for Banking Solutions and Chairman of the American Bankers Association International, to the Board.
- Sponsored an educational seminar on effective strategies for estate planning for professional advisors on the Vineyard.
- Established the Jack Ware Fund for Martha's Vineyard in honor of the Permanent Endowment's late founder and longtime leader, Jack Ware.
- Hosted the first meeting of Island grantmakers.
